I've been through a similar journey with bass drum heads, and it’s always interesting to see how much of a difference they can make. I personally lean towards the Evans EMAD for its versatility. The adjustable damping system is great because it allows you to tailor the sound to suit different genres, like having a more open and booming tone for rock or a tighter, more controlled sound for jazz.
For jazz, I’ve found that tuning the batter head a bit higher helps enhance the tonal qualities that suit the genre, while for rock, a deeper, punchier sound often works better. Muffling can really make or break your sound too. Sometimes I'll use a pillow or a specially designed bass drum pad to control the resonance, depending on the environment and style I'm playing.
The Remo Powerstroke is also highly recommended if you're looking for a solid, punchy sound with built-in dampening, reducing the need for additional muffling. One trick I like is using felt strips on the inside of the drum as an old-school method for a bit more control. Still, experimenting with these options to find your preferred sound is part of the fun!
