I’ve made the switch from regular 5Bs to Vic Firth Extreme 5Bs myself, and there definitely are some noticeable differences. First off, the extra length does give you additional reach, which personally helped me with power, especially during heavy rock sessions. It allowed for fuller strokes without needing to stretch too far, which might initially seem tiring, but I found it became more natural as I adjusted my grip slightly higher up on the stick.
In terms of balance, the Extreme 5Bs are well-weighted. The center of gravity feels a bit further out, which can enhance rebound, but it might take a few sessions to get fully accustomed if you’re used to shorter sticks. Regarding durability, I’ve found them to hold up quite well, much like other Vic Firth sticks, which are generally known for their reliability.
As for cymbal tone, the longer stick and slightly added weight can indeed deliver a bit more punch and presence. The cymbals ring out slightly differently – perhaps a bit brighter due to the increased force. However, it’s subtle and largely a matter of personal preference and the specific setup you're using.
Overall, they’re a solid choice if you’re looking to push your dynamic range. I’d recommend giving them a try, ideally in a setting where you can freely alternate between your regular pair and the Extreme 5Bs to get a true feel for the difference.
